In 2009 have chosen to photograph two different spaces which enclose personal memories.
They are abandoned family houses and each one represents aspects of my identity, history and culture.
The first house is located in the peaceful village Galata in Cyprus. It is about two hundred years old and belonged to my great grandparents.
After they have passed away, the house was left as it was with most of the family’s belongings inside.
The second house is located In Lefkosia by the Attila line which separates Cyprus in two.
During the Turkish invasion in 1974 my family was forced to abandon their home and become refugees in their own country.
Today the house lies in ruins, witness to the military presence and the political situation in Cyprus.
I have collected old photographs, drawings and objects from the locations and displayed them along my photographs
to enrich the audience’s experience at the exhibition. There is contrast between the two locations and it is emphasised
through these objects and images.
One side portrays happy, peaceful family warmth and the other portrays the coldness,
the pain, the violence and the catastrophic consequences of the war.
